The Passap Duomatic S/SD/GS series represents a classic line of domestic double-bed knitting machines manufactured by Madag (Passap) in Switzerland starting in 1968.[1] Commonly referred to as the "pink/green Passap" due to its iconic color scheme, this series was the direct precursor to the highly popular Passap Duomatic 80.
Architecture & Weightless Knitting[edit]
Passap Duomatic machines are built with a fundamentally different engineering design compared to Japanese flatbed machines:
- Integrated Double Bed: The front and back needle beds are built directly into the heavy metal frame of the machine. The beds cannot be detached like add-on ribbers.
- Strippers: Passap uses a patented "stripper" system (plastic or metal teeth mounted on the needle beds) to push fabric down as needles rise. Consequently, the machine knits entirely without the need for heavy weights or cast-on combs.
- Pushers: The front bed features a row of small metal pushers beneath the needles. These pushers can be set to working or non-working positions to mechanically direct the lock (carriage) to slip, tuck, or knit specific needles.
- S/SD/GS Differences: The base Duomatic S features pushers on the front bed only. The SD and GS models introduced minor mechanical modifications to the lock carriages and rail guides to improve selection and accessory compatibility.
Specifications & Accessories[edit]
- Gauge: 5.0 mm (standard Passap gauge) with 180 needles on each bed (360 total).
- Patterning: Manually selected via pushers and carriage dial settings (N, CX, DX, EX, GX).
- Color Changer: Compatible with the Passap 4-color mechanical color changer that mounts to the left guide rail.
- Deco Punchcard Unit: Can be fitted with the Passap Deco punchcard reader attachment using specialized brackets, bringing automatic 40-stitch patterning to the mechanical beds.
