The Record is a vintage, hand-operated single-bed home knitting machine first introduced in the early 1950s.[1] It is considered a transition machine between manual peg-frame hand-weaving tools and modern sliding-carriage domestic knitting machines.
Design & Capabilities[edit]
The machine features a long, stove-enameled green metal body with stainless steel ends and feet, which also incorporate a stitch gauge slider. Unlike circular sock machines or double-bed flatbed machines of the era, the Record is a single-bed hand-frame unit operated by manually wrapping yarn around pegs/needles and sliding a carriage lock.
- Sliders: The carriage has two operational sliders (one black and one white) that control the needle latch releases.
- Stitches: It is notable for being one of the few domestic machines of its class that could produce both stocking stitch (using both sliders) and garter stitch (using only the black slider) without requiring a second needle bed or ribber attachment.
