The Knittax M2 is a highly popular vintage flatbed knitting machine manufactured by Karl Steinhof in Berlin, Germany during the 1950s. Built with a sturdy metal needle bed, the M2 is renowned in the machine knitting community for its pioneering "Sinker" (Platinen) technology.
Sinker (Weightless) Technology[edit]
The defining feature of the Knittax M2 is its patented Platinen/Sinker system. Unlike Japanese knitting machines (such as Brother or Silver Reed) which require heavy claw weights and cast-on combs to pull the fabric down, the Knittax M2 carriage automatically presses the yarn down using integrated sinkers. This allows for completely weightless knitting, making it easy to cast on and knit with minimal fabric tension.
Patterning Capabilities[edit]
- Manual Selection: The carriage does not feature punchcard capability. Design and pattern stitches (such as tuck, slip, or cables) are created by manually selecting needles forward into pattern position.
- Stitch Dial: The carriage has a central stitch dial (numbered 1 to 10) to adjust the stitch size to match different yarn weights.
