The Bond Classic (originally released as the Bond Knitting Frame in 1982 in the United Kingdom) is the original modular, plastic-bed mid-gauge knitting machine. Designed by Cheryl Croft, it was created to bring the speed of machine knitting to home hobbyists using standard hand-knitting yarns. It features a distinctive brown and cream color scheme.
Design & Bed Structure[edit]
- Modular Beds: The needle bed consists of plastic interlocking sections. The standard package contains 100 needles (usually 4 sections of 25 needles), but multiple beds can be connected together to create extra-wide knitting frames.
- 8.0 mm Pitch: Features an 8.0 mm needle spacing (approx. 3.25 gauge), making it ideal for worsted, bulky, and chunky hand-knitting yarns.
- Plastic Keyplates: Rather than a dial, the stitch size (tension) is controlled by inserting different plastic keyplates (sizes 1, 2, 3, and 4) into the carriage. These keyplates control the needle return depth.
Compatible Accessories[edit]
- Bond Ribber: A plastic double-bed ribbing attachment allowing for 1x1, 2x2, and English ribbing.
- Bond Extension Kit: Extra sections of 25 needles each to expand the bed.
